At Nerd Academy, we don’t whisper science – we shout it through catapults, code, oilfield simulations, and oobleck. Because STEM education shouldn’t be stuck in a textbook or trapped in “safe” experiments from decades ago. It should move. It should matter. It should be kinetic.

That word- kinetic- means energy in motion. And that’s exactly what our students are.

What Does Real STEM Look Like?

Let’s start here: If someone tells you STEM is just computers and coding, they’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg. If they say it’s just frogs and food chains? Same deal. STEM, or STEAM, isn’t siloed.

At Nerd Academy, we go deeper. We go broader. We go bolder.

Our K–5 students explore:

Ecology through planting seeds and watching real ecosystems grow

Engineering through parachute egg drops and physics-bending catapults

Technology through HTML, CSS, AI literacy and prompt engineering

Energy and Earth science with hands-on lessons about fracking, pumpjacks, oilfield logistics, and horizontal drilling (yes, we teach that)

Math through rhythm, manipulatives, and YouTube algorithm decoding – because multiplication tables and metadata both count

And while they’re learning all this, they’re also growing into confident, curious, purpose-driven kids who know how to ask the right questions and solve the big problems.

It Started with a Song…

We put it into words. Then into rhythm. Then into video. Because our STEM anthem wasn’t just a song- it was a declaration:

“STEM ain’t static- it’s kinetic,
Lessons hit deep, poetic, prophetic.
Oil and gas to AI and design,
Real-world relevance in every line.”

If your kid is being labeled instead of lifted…
If they’re bored, overlooked, or way ahead of the curve …
If you’ve ever said, “There has to be a better way to do school,”- you’re not alone.

We said the same thing. That’s why we created Nerd Academy.

We’re a school founded by parents who saw the gaps, felt the frustration, and decided to build a place where kids could thrive on purpose.

We don’t recruit with fluff. We recruit with proof. Come see the labs, the projects, the messy tables covered in ideas. Meet the kids who can explain how a pumpjack works and why YouTube pushes certain videos.

Come tour Nerd Academy. Ask hard questions. We’ll meet you with real answers.

At Nerd Academy, we believe that children are capable of learning far more than we often give them credit for. When given the right tools, hands-on experiences, and engaging instruction, young students can develop a deep understanding of real-world industries that shape their communities.

That’s why our students—some as young as second grade—can already explain how sucker rod pumping units work. They don’t just memorize parts; they understand the mechanics, the purpose, and the bigger picture of how these pumps contribute to the oil and gas industry, a sector that generates billions in annual revenue and fuels the economy of West Texas and beyond.

What Our Students Know About Sucker Rod Pumps

Most adults who grew up in West Texas drive past pump jacks every day, but few actually understand how they work. Our students, on the other hand, can explain:

Why sucker rod pumps are used – These pumps are a form of artificial lift used when reservoir pressure is too low to bring oil to the surface naturally. They allow wells that are no longer free-flowing to continue producing small but steady amounts of oil per day.

How the traveling and standing valves function – These valves act as one-way flow controllers inside the downhole pump. One of our second graders can already explain how the standing valve opens during the upstroke while the traveling valve closes, allowing fluid to enter the pump barrel—and how the roles reverse on the downstroke to push oil toward the surface.

How sucker rod pumps fit into the larger extraction process – Our students don’t just learn the names of parts; they understand how they work together. They know that pump jacks do, in fact, “suck” oil out of the ground—but not in the way most people assume. The up-and-down motion of the sucker rod string drives the downhole pump, where the coordinated opening and closing of valves creates suction that lifts oil to the surface.

How pump jacks fit into the life cycle of an oil well – Our students understand that pump jacks are typically used near the end of a well’s productive life—when natural reservoir pressure has declined—and that this extends the well’s ability to produce oil economically.

At an age when many kids are still learning basic sentence structure, our students are already developing real-world industry knowledge that most people never learn in their lifetime. And they’re not just learning for the sake of memorization—they’re learning why it matters.

Why Should Students Learn This at a Young Age?

Some of our students will become the leaders of tomorrow—city officials, lawmakers, business owners, engineers, and innovators. Whether they directly enter the energy sector or take on roles in community leadership, the decisions they make will impact the industry, the economy, and the future of our region.

By introducing industry knowledge early, we are ensuring that:

Future policymakers understand the economic impact of their decisions. Some of these students may one day draft legislation that affects the oil and gas industry. An early education gives them the perspective to make informed decisions that balance economic growth, environmental concerns, and energy needs.

Students recognize career opportunities that align with their skills and interests. Not every student will work directly in oil and gas, but many may find their talents applied in technology, automation, logistics, or environmental management—fields that directly support the energy sector.

They develop pride in their local economy and community. It’s hard to take pride in something you don’t understand. When children learn how critical industries function, they develop a deeper appreciation for the region they call home. That sense of pride can influence whether they choose to stay and contribute to their community or take their talents elsewhere.

Beyond Standardized Tests: Preparing Students for the Real World

We can’t expect students to spend their entire school experience preparing for standardized tests and then suddenly be ready to make informed decisions about their future, their careers, or their community.

We don’t administer STAAR tests or design our curriculum around teaching students how to pass an exam. Instead, we ensure they develop the foundational skills that will serve them in life—literacy, numeracy, problem-solving, and critical thinking—while giving them early exposure to STEM, AI, and industry knowledge that connects learning to real-world applications.

We know that early exposure to real-world industries matters. Research confirms that high-quality childhood education is directly linked to success in higher education and career pathways. Yet, at the rate the traditional school system is declining, with students falling further behind in reading and writing, the likelihood of many students even reaching college is shrinking.

If we want our students to succeed—whether they pursue higher education, enter the workforce, or take on leadership roles—we have to start early.

Understanding Their World, Shaping Their Future

A child’s immediate environment is their entire world. The community they grow up in, the industries that sustain that community, and the opportunities available to them all play a role in shaping who they become.

In West Texas, so much of that world revolves around the oil and gas industry—directly or indirectly. Whether through engineering, automation, logistics, policy-making, or business development, understanding how their community functions will allow students to make better, more informed choices about their future.

At Nerd Academy, we’re unlocking the world around them, ensuring they have the knowledge, confidence, and skills to become the leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers of tomorrow.

The latest results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)—also known as the nation’s report card—are in, and the findings are worse than ever. Reading and math scores continue to decline, and the gap between high-performing and low-performing students is wider than ever. (Source: NewsWest9)

For years, schools have touted accreditation and teacher certification as proof of quality education. But if accreditation guarantees quality, why do we have accredited schools at opposite ends of the performance spectrum? And if teacher certification ensures classroom success, why are so many certified teachers burning out and struggling within the system?

Clearly, something isn’t working.

More Testing, More Stress, Fewer Results

The public school system continues to prioritize teaching to the test, spending years preparing students for standardized exams that fail to reflect real-world skills or future job markets. This test-driven culture isn’t helping students master literacy and numeracy, and it’s not helping teachers effectively teach.

Instead, it’s creating a vicious cycle:
Students fall behind → More test prep → Less real learning → More failure → Repeat.

Meanwhile, teachers are overworked and under-resourced—expected to close the gaps with insufficient support. Is teacher certification actually preparing them for today’s education culture, or has it become nothing more than a bureaucratic checklist?

At the same time, schools continue to receive accreditation, despite massive failures in student achievement. The same standards are applied across the board, yet we still end up with high-performing and failing schools, all equally accredited. If accreditation is supposed to ensure quality, why do so many accredited schools still fail their students?

We Need to Rethink Education from the Ground Up

This isn’t just about bad test scores. This is about an outdated system that refuses to modernize. Are we really testing students based on what they need for the future? Or are the same people who grew up taking these tests still designing them, completely missing the mark on what today’s students actually need?

If public schools truly want to fix this crisis, they need to:

Reduce class sizes so teachers can actually teach instead of just managing a system in crisis.

Invest in AI-powered tools that can assist struggling students and challenge advanced learners.

Train teachers to leverage AI and modern technology, instead of leaving them overwhelmed with outdated methods.

Stop using standardized testing as the ultimate measure of success and start focusing on real-world skills.

Reevaluate accreditation and teacher certification standards to ensure they actually reflect what students and teachers need to thrive.

A Smarter Approach to Education

At Nerd Academy, we’re taking a different path. We prioritize mastery of the fundamentals—reading, writing, and math—because without these skills, students will struggle to succeed in a world that’s evolving faster than ever.

But we also know that mastering the basics isn’t enough. That’s why we’re building the classrooms of the future, where teachers lead and AI assists. Our students don’t just prepare for the world—they understand it.

Small class sizes → so teachers can focus on individual students.
AI-powered learning → so students at every level are challenged appropriately.
A future-ready curriculum → coding, research, AI literacy, PetroSTEAM and skills that matter in the real world.

This isn’t about keeping up with broken systems. This is about laying the groundwork for extraordinary futures.

A better education system won’t build itself. While others debate, we’re already making it a reality.

In recent years, the concept of “choice schools” has transformed the way families approach education, offering parents the opportunity to find schools that align with their children’s unique needs, interests, and learning styles. In Odessa, ECISD’s Choice Schools initiative provides families with diverse options, empowering them to make decisions that prioritize their children’s success and happiness.

But what if there was a school choice that went beyond the traditional? A choice that not only offers flexibility and innovation but also redefines the learning experience for students of all ages?

At Nerd Academy, we’ve embraced the spirit of choice schools and elevated it to the next level. Our mission is simple yet ambitious: to combine flexibility, innovation, and a commitment to excellence in a way that transforms how children learn and grow. Nerd Academy isn’t just another option—it’s the future of education, tailored to meet the needs of families in Odessa and beyond.

What Sets Nerd Academy Apart: A Premium School Choice

Small Class Sizes for Personalized Instruction
At Nerd Academy, we believe that every child deserves to be seen, heard, and understood. That’s why we keep our class sizes small, ensuring each student receives the personalized attention they need to thrive. In a small group setting, teachers can tailor lesson plans to suit individual learning styles, fostering both academic growth and confidence.

With fewer distractions and more opportunities for one-on-one interaction, students can focus on building their strengths and addressing challenges in a supportive environment. Our approach to education redefines what families should expect from a school choice, nurturing each child’s potential to excel in their unique way.

No Standardized Testing
We understand that children are more than test scores. At Nerd Academy, we prioritize real-world learning and practical skills over teaching to the test. By removing the pressure of standardized assessments, we create space for students to explore their creativity, develop critical thinking skills, and engage with subjects in meaningful ways.

This approach to education is what makes Nerd Academy a standout school choice in Odessa. By focusing on understanding and application, our students grow into well-rounded learners who are curious, innovative, and ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

Flexibility for On-the-Road Families
For families in the oil and gas sector or running small businesses, flexibility is essential. That’s where our OTR (On The Road) Learning program shines. Designed with busy, traveling families in mind, OTR Learning combines in-class education with hybrid options that ensure continuity no matter where life takes you.

Families searching for a flexible choice school in Odessa will find Nerd Academy the perfect solution. Students receive work packets and tablets equipped with everything they need to stay on track, whether they’re at home, on a job site, or traveling cross-country. Our approach keeps learning consistent and engaging, so families never have to choose between education and their lifestyle.

SEL Training and a Safe Environment
We understand the profound impact of a safe and supportive environment on a child’s ability to learn. Nerd Academy prioritizes Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) as a cornerstone of our curriculum. Through SEL training, we equip students with the skills to navigate challenges, manage emotions, and build positive relationships.

For parents seeking a school choice that goes beyond academics, Nerd Academy stands out. Our role-playing activities teach children to develop empathy, resilience, and the confidence to pick their battles wisely. In a world where bullying can hinder academic and personal growth, we take proactive steps to ensure every child feels valued and secure.
