At Nerd Academy, we don’t whisper science – we shout it through catapults, code, oilfield simulations, and oobleck. Because STEM education shouldn’t be stuck in a textbook or trapped in “safe” experiments from decades ago. It should move. It should matter. It should be kinetic.

That word- kinetic- means energy in motion. And that’s exactly what our students are.

What Does Real STEM Look Like?

Let’s start here: If someone tells you STEM is just computers and coding, they’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg. If they say it’s just frogs and food chains? Same deal. STEM, or STEAM, isn’t siloed.

At Nerd Academy, we go deeper. We go broader. We go bolder.

Our K–5 students explore:

Ecology through planting seeds and watching real ecosystems grow

Engineering through parachute egg drops and physics-bending catapults

Technology through HTML, CSS, AI literacy and prompt engineering

Energy and Earth science with hands-on lessons about fracking, pumpjacks, oilfield logistics, and horizontal drilling (yes, we teach that)

Math through rhythm, manipulatives, and YouTube algorithm decoding – because multiplication tables and metadata both count

And while they’re learning all this, they’re also growing into confident, curious, purpose-driven kids who know how to ask the right questions and solve the big problems.

It Started with a Song…

We put it into words. Then into rhythm. Then into video. Because our STEM anthem wasn’t just a song- it was a declaration:

“STEM ain’t static- it’s kinetic,
Lessons hit deep, poetic, prophetic.
Oil and gas to AI and design,
Real-world relevance in every line.”

We don’t just say we’re different. We show it. Loud and proud.

If You’re a Parent Who’s Tired of the Same Old Story…

If your kid is being labeled instead of lifted…
If they’re bored, overlooked, or way ahead of the curve …
If you’ve ever said, “There has to be a better way to do school,”- you’re not alone.

We said the same thing. That’s why we created Nerd Academy.

We’re a school founded by parents who saw the gaps, felt the frustration, and decided to build a place where kids could thrive on purpose.

Want to See It for Yourself?

We don’t recruit with fluff. We recruit with proof. Come see the labs, the projects, the messy tables covered in ideas. Meet the kids who can explain how a pumpjack works and why YouTube pushes certain videos.

Come tour Nerd Academy. Ask hard questions. We’ll meet you with real answers.

At Nerd Academy, we believe that children are capable of learning far more than we often give them credit for. When given the right tools, hands-on experiences, and engaging instruction, young students can develop a deep understanding of real-world industries that shape their communities.

That’s why our students—some as young as second grade—can already explain how sucker rod pumping units work. They don’t just memorize parts; they understand the mechanics, the purpose, and the bigger picture of how these pumps contribute to the oil and gas industry, a sector that generates billions in annual revenue and fuels the economy of West Texas and beyond.

What Our Students Know About Sucker Rod Pumps

Most adults who grew up in West Texas drive past pump jacks every day, but few actually understand how they work. Our students, on the other hand, can explain:

Why sucker rod pumps are used – These pumps are a form of artificial lift used when reservoir pressure is too low to bring oil to the surface naturally. They allow wells that are no longer free-flowing to continue producing small but steady amounts of oil per day.

How the traveling and standing valves function – These valves act as one-way flow controllers inside the downhole pump. One of our second graders can already explain how the standing valve opens during the upstroke while the traveling valve closes, allowing fluid to enter the pump barrel—and how the roles reverse on the downstroke to push oil toward the surface.

How sucker rod pumps fit into the larger extraction process – Our students don’t just learn the names of parts; they understand how they work together. They know that pump jacks do, in fact, “suck” oil out of the ground—but not in the way most people assume. The up-and-down motion of the sucker rod string drives the downhole pump, where the coordinated opening and closing of valves creates suction that lifts oil to the surface.

How pump jacks fit into the life cycle of an oil well – Our students understand that pump jacks are typically used near the end of a well’s productive life—when natural reservoir pressure has declined—and that this extends the well’s ability to produce oil economically.

At an age when many kids are still learning basic sentence structure, our students are already developing real-world industry knowledge that most people never learn in their lifetime. And they’re not just learning for the sake of memorization—they’re learning why it matters.

Why Should Students Learn This at a Young Age?

Some of our students will become the leaders of tomorrow—city officials, lawmakers, business owners, engineers, and innovators. Whether they directly enter the energy sector or take on roles in community leadership, the decisions they make will impact the industry, the economy, and the future of our region.

By introducing industry knowledge early, we are ensuring that:

Future policymakers understand the economic impact of their decisions. Some of these students may one day draft legislation that affects the oil and gas industry. An early education gives them the perspective to make informed decisions that balance economic growth, environmental concerns, and energy needs.

Students recognize career opportunities that align with their skills and interests. Not every student will work directly in oil and gas, but many may find their talents applied in technology, automation, logistics, or environmental management—fields that directly support the energy sector.

They develop pride in their local economy and community. It’s hard to take pride in something you don’t understand. When children learn how critical industries function, they develop a deeper appreciation for the region they call home. That sense of pride can influence whether they choose to stay and contribute to their community or take their talents elsewhere.

Beyond Standardized Tests: Preparing Students for the Real World

We can’t expect students to spend their entire school experience preparing for standardized tests and then suddenly be ready to make informed decisions about their future, their careers, or their community.

We don’t administer STAAR tests or design our curriculum around teaching students how to pass an exam. Instead, we ensure they develop the foundational skills that will serve them in life—literacy, numeracy, problem-solving, and critical thinking—while giving them early exposure to STEM, AI, and industry knowledge that connects learning to real-world applications.

We know that early exposure to real-world industries matters. Research confirms that high-quality childhood education is directly linked to success in higher education and career pathways. Yet, at the rate the traditional school system is declining, with students falling further behind in reading and writing, the likelihood of many students even reaching college is shrinking.

If we want our students to succeed—whether they pursue higher education, enter the workforce, or take on leadership roles—we have to start early.

Understanding Their World, Shaping Their Future

A child’s immediate environment is their entire world. The community they grow up in, the industries that sustain that community, and the opportunities available to them all play a role in shaping who they become.

In West Texas, so much of that world revolves around the oil and gas industry—directly or indirectly. Whether through engineering, automation, logistics, policy-making, or business development, understanding how their community functions will allow students to make better, more informed choices about their future.

At Nerd Academy, we’re unlocking the world around them, ensuring they have the knowledge, confidence, and skills to become the leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers of tomorrow.

Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing education by offering innovative tools that empower students with disabilities. From personalized learning plans to real-time communication aids, AI is fostering inclusivity and creating opportunities for students who may have otherwise been left behind. However, as with any new technology, challenges and risks must be addressed to ensure responsible implementation. This article dives into practical applications of AI in education, real-world success stories, and the hurdles that educators and students face in integrating these tools into learning environments.

Practical Applications of AI in Supporting Students with Disabilities

Personalized Learning Materials

AI-driven platforms are reshaping the way students access and interact with educational content by tailoring materials to suit individual learning needs. These tools can help students with disabilities engage more effectively with their curriculum. For instance, programs like DreamBox Learning and Knewton Alta offer adaptive learning experiences:

DreamBox Learning customizes math lessons to match the pace and learning style of each student. For students with dyslexia, it simplifies complex language and focuses on comprehension, ensuring they can keep up with their peers.

Knewton Alta personalizes educational content, ensuring that lessons are aligned with individual learning preferences and helping students overcome challenges in areas like math and science.

Assistive Communication Tools

For students with speech and language difficulties, AI-powered applications provide essential support, enabling them to communicate and participate in classroom activities with greater independence. Examples include:

Ava, a real-time transcription app, converts spoken language into text for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, supporting multiple languages and group conversations.

SRAVI, an AI-powered lip-reading app, translates lip movements into text or audio, helping students with severe speech impairments communicate effectively.

These tools serve as lifelines, empowering students to actively engage in discussions and express their thoughts confidently.

Accessible Assessments

AI is advancing the development of fair and accessible assessments for students with disabilities, ensuring evaluations accommodate their unique needs. Programs like Be My AI are making a significant impact:

Be My AI acts as a virtual assistant for visually impaired students, providing instant visual descriptions and adapting test materials for easier comprehension.

Other platforms focus on creating math evaluations tailored for visually impaired students, ensuring they are assessed fairly without being at a disadvantage.

These tools help level the playing field in educational assessments, providing all students with equal opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge.

Learning Environment Customization

AI applications are transforming classrooms for students with autism by creating predictable and calming environments that reduce sensory overload and enhance focus. For example:

WonderBaby highlights tools that adjust lighting, sound, and visual stimuli to suit individual needs, ensuring students feel safe and supported in their learning environments.

Additionally, AI-driven apps can help structure lessons in a way that aligns with a student’s specific sensory preferences, improving information retention and overall classroom experience.

These innovations ensure that learning environments are inclusive and conducive to success for students with autism.

Case Studies Highlighting AI’s Impact

AI-Powered Lip-Reading Applications

The SRAVI app is an innovative AI-powered solution designed to assist individuals with speech impairments. By interpreting lip movements and converting them into text or audio, SRAVI provides a vital bridge for effective communication. This groundbreaking tool is particularly impactful in educational settings, where students with speech disabilities can face significant barriers to participation.

For example, a student with limited verbal abilities can use SRAVI to communicate their thoughts, answers, or questions during classroom discussions, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to group activities and learn alongside their peers. Teachers can use the app to better understand their students’ needs, fostering a more inclusive and collaborative learning environment.

Moreover, SRAVI empowers students by giving them independence in communication. Rather than relying solely on human assistance or traditional methods like sign language or written notes, students can express themselves in real time, promoting confidence and social inclusion.

AI in Special Education

A study conducted by the Center for Innovation, Design, and Digital Learning (CIDDL) showcases the transformative impact of AI in special education. AI tools are being utilized to create inclusive learning environments that cater to the unique challenges faced by students with disabilities, offering solutions that were once unimaginable.

For instance, one school integrated AI-powered personalized learning platforms for students with dyslexia. These tools analyzed each student’s reading patterns and provided tailored interventions, such as breaking down complex words, offering alternative phrasing, and adjusting text-to-speech speeds. The result was an improvement in reading comprehension and a noticeable boost in the students’ confidence.

Another case from CIDDL highlights the use of AI-driven assessment tools for students with visual impairments. By replacing traditional written tests with interactive, voice-based assessments, these tools eliminated barriers and allowed students to demonstrate their knowledge more effectively.

The study emphasizes that AI not only addresses academic needs but also plays a role in social-emotional development. By providing opportunities for students with disabilities to work at their own pace and access resources independently, AI fosters a sense of empowerment and reduces the stigma often associated with special education programs.

Additionally, educators have noted the benefits of AI in reducing their workload. With AI-powered tools handling tasks like creating adaptive lesson plans or grading assessments tailored to individual needs, teachers can focus more on providing direct support and building stronger connections with their students.

Challenges and Risks

While AI holds transformative potential for education, especially for students with disabilities, its adoption is not without challenges. These challenges must be addressed through thoughtful planning, equitable implementation, and ongoing evaluation to ensure that AI tools genuinely benefit all learners.

Accessibility of AI Tools

Ironically, the students who stand to benefit most from AI—those with disabilities—are often the least able to access these tools. Financial and logistical barriers, such as the high cost of AI-enabled devices, lack of funding for specialized software, or limited internet connectivity in rural or underserved areas, create significant obstacles.

For instance, many AI-powered assistive tools, like real-time transcription apps or adaptive learning platforms, require advanced hardware or constant internet access to function optimally. Schools in low-income areas may not have the resources to invest in such technologies, leaving students at a disadvantage.

Developers and policymakers must prioritize accessibility when designing and implementing AI solutions. This includes creating low-cost or open-source alternatives, partnering with governments and non-profits to subsidize technology for schools, and ensuring tools are compatible with commonly available devices. By addressing these disparities, we can ensure that AI empowers all students, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

Data Privacy Concerns

AI’s reliance on large amounts of data to function effectively raises significant concerns about privacy and ethical use. Educational AI tools often collect sensitive student data, including academic performance, behavioral patterns, and even health information. Without robust safeguards, this data could be misused or fall into the wrong hands.

For example, poorly secured platforms could be vulnerable to data breaches, exposing sensitive information. Additionally, there is the risk of companies using collected data for profit-driven purposes, such as targeted advertising, without the consent of students or their families.

To mitigate these risks, schools and AI developers must implement strong data protection measures, including encryption, secure data storage, and strict access controls. Furthermore, transparency is crucial: schools should clearly communicate what data is being collected, how it will be used, and who has access to it. Policymakers must also enforce regulations to ensure compliance with data privacy laws, such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) or the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in applicable regions.

Overreliance on Technology

As AI becomes more integrated into education, there is a risk of overreliance on technology at the expense of traditional learning methods. While AI tools can support students and make learning more accessible, they should not replace foundational skill-building or critical thinking.

For instance, a student who relies exclusively on AI to write essays or solve math problems may miss out on developing essential skills like writing structure, problem-solving, or analytical thinking. This dependence can lead to gaps in understanding and a reduced ability to function independently in situations where AI is unavailable.

Educators must strike a balance by using AI as a supplement rather than a substitute. For example, they can encourage students to use AI for brainstorming ideas or providing feedback while ensuring the students do the actual work. Integrating AI thoughtfully into lesson plans will allow students to develop critical skills alongside benefiting from the technology’s support.

Ethical Considerations

AI systems are only as good as the data they are trained on. If that data contains biases—such as stereotypes, cultural prejudices, or inequities—those biases can be reflected in the AI’s outputs. This can lead to unfair treatment of students with disabilities or perpetuate existing inequalities.

For example, an AI tool designed to assess reading ability might unfairly penalize students with dyslexia if the training data does not adequately represent their unique reading patterns. Similarly, an algorithm might inadvertently assume a student has a specific disability based on patterns in their performance, potentially leading to mislabeling or inappropriate educational tracking.

Continuous monitoring and refinement of AI algorithms are essential to mitigate such risks. Developers must prioritize diverse and representative training datasets, while schools should routinely evaluate the outputs of AI systems to identify and address any biases. Ethical oversight boards and guidelines can also help ensure that AI tools are used fairly and responsibly in educational settings.

Conclusion

AI has the potential to transform education for students with disabilities, leveling the playing field and opening doors to opportunities previously thought unattainable. However, thoughtful implementation, ethical considerations, and ongoing collaboration between educators, technologists, and policymakers are crucial to ensure that these tools are used responsibly. By addressing challenges and risks, we can harness the full power of AI to create inclusive, innovative, and equitable learning environments for all students.

Introduction

“Are your teachers certified?”
“Are you accredited?”

Fair questions, especially if you’ve spent years watching your child struggle in a school that checked all the right boxes.

But what if those boxes are part of the problem?

If your child has been labeled, overlooked, or just plain bored, even in a fully accredited school with certified staff, it’s worth asking:

What do those labels actually guarantee?
And why do so many “approved” schools keep failing our kids?

The truth is, the things we’ve been taught to trust, certification, accreditation, bureaucracy, don’t always translate to meaningful learning, emotional safety, or long-term success.

And that system? It’s not just underfunded.
It’s misaligned. Politicized. Bureaucratic.
And often, dangerously biased.

That’s why at Nerd Academy, we’re not just rethinking how we teach kids.
We’re questioning the very system that’s been deciding what counts as “good enough” for too long.

The Public Education System Is Broken — So Why Trust the Pieces It’s Built On?

Let’s start with the truth that rarely gets said out loud.

In Texas during the 2023–24 school year:

31% of public school teachers were uncertified.

In charter schools, it jumped to 60%.

Classrooms across the state were staffed by long-term substitutes who aren’t required to be certified at all.

These aren’t outliers. This is the backbone of public education staffing.
So ask yourself: If certification guaranteed competence, how do these numbers make sense?

Because in reality, certification is about compliance – not capability.

Even the certification process itself is broken.

Teachers of Tomorrow, Texas’s largest alternative certification program, was placed on probation in 2022 and remained under scrutiny throughout 2023. The Texas Education Agency reported that the program failed to meet standards around candidate support, accurate marketing, and meaningful field supervision.

Then came the Houston scandal.

In 2023, a $1 million cheating ring was uncovered, revealing that over 200 Texas teachers were illegally certified. Proctors were paid to take certification tests on behalf of aspiring educators. Teaching certificates were handed out like receipts – no training, no accountability.

Yet these teachers walked into classrooms backed by “official” credentials.

If this is what certification looks like…
Why is it still treated as a stamp of trust?

Accreditation: A System That Approves Broken Schools

Certification isn’t the only piece of the puzzle being misused.

Accreditation, the thing schools wave like a badge of honor, has quietly lost its meaning.

98% of Texas public schools are fully accredited, despite:

Fewer than half of all STAAR test scores meeting grade-level expectations

Just 1 in 5 students reaching “Masters” level, the standard that actually indicates strong understanding

That means a school can be “A-rated” and fully accredited – while failing to teach half of its students how to read or do math at grade level.

Accreditation doesn’t measure joy.
It doesn’t measure engagement, future-readiness, or a child’s confidence in their own learning.
It measures bureaucracy. Checkboxes. Compliance.

If both “top” and “bottom” schools are accredited, what is the system really validating?

Bias in Classrooms: A Hidden Barrier to Student Success

Let’s go deeper, into the classrooms themselves.
Because even when a school looks good on paper, something insidious can still happen.

Students aren’t just evaluated by test scores.
They’re evaluated by perceptions. And those perceptions are often shaped by bias, conscious or not.

Consider this:

White teachers are 12% less likely to believe Black students will graduate high school, and 30% less likely to expect college completion – based purely on race, not performance.

Teachers are less tolerant of identical behaviors in boys or Black students compared to white peers.

In math, boys are often given higher grades, even when girls perform equally well.

Black girls are 12 times more likely to be suspended than white girls, often for “disrespect” or subjective infractions.

Essays labeled with “Black” or “Latino” names receive less constructive feedback, despite similar quality.

And it’s not always overt. Sometimes it’s the subtle psychological effects that do the most damage:

The Halo Effect leads teachers to overestimate a “well-dressed,” quiet student’s intelligence – and underestimate the messy, outspoken one.

What You See Is All There Is (WYSIATI), a cognitive shortcut coined by Daniel Kahneman, causes teachers to form fixed judgments on limited data – often the first impression.

The Horn Effect works in reverse: one negative moment leads to unfairly harsh treatment over time.

This isn’t just theory. It’s peer-reviewed, documented, and repeated across schools.

And it helps explain why so many students, especially those from marginalized backgrounds, start strong but disengage over time.

What We’re Building Instead: A System That Sees the Whole Child

At Nerd Academy, we saw this and said: no more.

We use the TEKS standards as a loose framework – but our training, our classrooms, our entire educational model is built from scratch.

Here’s what that looks like:

Whole-Brain Child philosophy (Siegel & Bryson): A neuroscience-backed model to teach children how to integrate emotion and logic – so they can focus, cope, and grow.

Bias training for teachers to dismantle the Halo Effect, Horn Effect, and WYSIATI thinking – before it shapes a child’s story.

Science-of-Reading instruction, including phonics through programs like Secret Stories.

Play-based learning, grounded in psychology and real-world relevance.

Adaptive e-learning tools that track every skill in real-time, so teachers can identify struggling or advanced students before the damage is done.

BOY/MOY/EOY assessments built into the rhythm of instruction – not dropped in months later like a surprise audit.

Lesson planning and curriculum design rooted in critical thinking – not test prep.

We don’t train teachers to check boxes.
We train them to change outcomes.

The Real Question Isn’t “Are You Certified?”

It’s this:

Is your child in a system designed to help them succeed?

Public education has become a machine.
Even great teachers are stuck inside it – frustrated, exhausted, and buried in red tape.

We didn’t want to build a “better” version of that system.
We wanted a different one.

A school where:

Classrooms feel like labs, not factories

Teachers are trained to think, not just comply

Every student is seen – without labels, bias, or burn-out

Final Thoughts: Look Beyond the Wall

Parents ask, “Are you certified?” because they’ve been trained to.
But what they’re really sensing is this:

The system doesn’t feel right anymore.
The results don’t match the promises.
The labels don’t reflect the child you know.

Certification and accreditation may satisfy the state.
But we’re not trying to impress the state.
We’re here to serve students.

It’s not about the certificate on the wall.
It’s about what happens inside these walls – every single day.

The Power of School Choice

In recent years, the concept of “choice schools” has transformed the way families approach education, offering parents the opportunity to find schools that align with their children’s unique needs, interests, and learning styles. In Odessa, ECISD’s Choice Schools initiative provides families with diverse options, empowering them to make decisions that prioritize their children’s success and happiness.

But what if there was a school choice that went beyond the traditional? A choice that not only offers flexibility and innovation but also redefines the learning experience for students of all ages?

At Nerd Academy, we’ve embraced the spirit of choice schools and elevated it to the next level. Our mission is simple yet ambitious: to combine flexibility, innovation, and a commitment to excellence in a way that transforms how children learn and grow. Nerd Academy isn’t just another option—it’s the future of education, tailored to meet the needs of families in Odessa and beyond.

What Sets Nerd Academy Apart: A Premium School Choice

That’s why we keep our class sizes small, ensuring each student receives the personalized attention they need to thrive. In a small group setting, teachers can tailor lesson plans to suit individual learning styles, fostering both academic growth and confidence.

With fewer distractions and more opportunities for one-on-one interaction, students can focus on building their strengths and addressing challenges in a supportive environment. Our approach to education redefines what families should expect from a school choice, nurturing each child’s potential to excel in their unique way.

No Standardized Testing
We understand that children are more than test scores. At Nerd Academy, we prioritize real-world learning and practical skills over teaching to the test. By removing the pressure of standardized assessments, we create space for students to explore their creativity, develop critical thinking skills, and engage with subjects in meaningful ways.

This approach to education is what makes Nerd Academy a standout school choice in Odessa. By focusing on understanding and application, our students grow into well-rounded learners who are curious, innovative, and ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

SEL Training and a Safe Environment
We understand the profound impact of a safe and supportive environment on a child’s ability to learn. Through SEL training, we equip students with the skills to navigate challenges, manage emotions, and build positive relationships.

Odessa, TX — Nestled in the heart of the Permian Basin, Nerd Academy is setting a new standard for education in West Texas. With a bold focus on literacy, STEM, and social-emotional learning (SEL), the school is proud to announce it is now enrolling students in grades K-4 for its second semester.

As the first primary school in the nation to incorporate the oil and gas industry into its curriculum, Nerd Academy is bringing an innovative program called PetroSTEAM to local students. This one-of-a-kind initiative simplifies complex concepts like Drill String Design into fun, hands-on activities for children as young as first grade. The aim is to equip students with a strong foundation in reading, writing, and math while introducing them to the opportunities that drive the region’s economy.

“We believe education should be relevant to the community it serves,” said Abel Nunez, co-founder and President of Nerd Academy, Inc. “Growing up in the Permian Basin, it’s vital for our kids to understand the industries that power our local economy. PetroSTEAM is about more than teaching STEM—it’s about showing students how their talents can shape their future right here at home.”

Nunez brings a wealth of experience to his role, including 11 years in the United States Air Force, where he served as a Medical Unit Readiness Training instructor. “During my time in the Air Force, I was part of a cadre of instructors that trained over 10,000 Airmen a year to prepare for deployment,” he said. “That experience taught me how to break down complex ideas into lessons that resonate with a wide range of learners. At Nerd Academy, we’re using that same approach to make STEM exciting and accessible for young minds.”

A School Built With Purpose
Nerd Academy prioritizes more than academics. Each day begins with SEL lessons that promote leadership, individuality, and a strong antibullying culture. Students also get an hour of dedicated time to work on passion projects, fostering creativity and self-confidence.

For families considering enrollment, Nerd Academy offers a unique blend of structure and innovation. All school supplies and uniforms are provided, and tuition information can be found on the school’s website. The school currently has openings for 12 kindergarten students and aims to grow its student body from 8 to 30 for the spring semester.

A Call for Community Support
To enhance its program, Nerd Academy is seeking partnerships with local oil and gas companies. Donations, sponsorships, and scholarships are vital to equipping students with cutting-edge technology, such as iPads, computers, and a STEAM lab.

“We’re not just educating students—we’re investing in the future workforce of West Texas,” Nunez added. “We invite local businesses to join us in this mission by supporting our efforts to inspire and prepare the next generation of innovators, leaders, and entrepreneurs.”

Nerd Academy is located inside the Odessa Family YMCA, whose support has been instrumental in the school’s success since opening on October 1, 2024.

Abel and Raquel Nunez have called Odessa home for many years. As proud parents of two daughters, they’ve always prioritized education and personal growth for their children.

When it came time for their daughters to start school, Abel and Raquel opted for private education. However, they soon became concerned about the culture their kids were exposed to, even in this environment.

“We pulled them out of private school a little over a year ago and started homeschooling,” Abel explained. “We were looking for a new private school, but all of them had waitlists that were two years out.”

This challenge sparked an idea: what if they opened their own private school? Abel and Raquel weren’t alone in this vision—fellow parents Natalia Ponce and Brittany Silvas, who shared similar concerns, joined them in taking the leap.

“It started with the four of us parents,” Abel said. “We wanted our kids to get a solid education while also learning real-world skills.”

In October 2024, The Nerd Academy officially opened its doors. The school focuses on the fundamentals—reading, writing, and math—while offering a curriculum designed to reflect the modern world.

“One unique program we’ve developed is PetroSTEAM,” Abel shared. “It’s a STEAM-based curriculum with a focus on the oil and gas industry, which drives our local economy. We want students to understand how the world around them works.”

The Nerd Academy’s innovative approach also includes coding lessons for kids as young as six, social-emotional learning (SEL), and hands-on projects in urban development through its upcoming CitySTEAM program.

In addition to its academic rigor, the school enforces a zero-tolerance policy for bullying. “We understand how bullying can affect a child’s well-being and their ability to learn,” Raquel explained. “That’s why we focus on creating a safe, inclusive environment where every student feels supported and valued.”

Currently, The Nerd Academy is accepting applications for Kindergarten through 4th grade. The school began with just seven students but is aiming to grow to 30 by the spring 2024-2025 semester.

“Our goal is to educate our students and to empower them with skills and confidence for life,” Abel said.

Introduction

In a world rapidly evolving with technology and global interconnections, the traditional benchmarks of academic success are being reevaluated. At Nerd Academy, due to open for the 2024-2025 school year in the vibrant heart of Odessa, TX, we’re pioneering an educational model that transcends the conventional, one-size-fits-all approach to learning. Our philosophy? While well-intentioned, standardized testing, such as the STAAR, falls short of capturing the full spectrum of a student’s capabilities and potential.

The STAAR Dilemma

The transition from TAKS to STAAR was intended to introduce a more rigorous benchmark. However, this shift has brought to light significant concerns regarding such standardized tests’ accuracy, relevance, and overall impact. With reading passages assessed to be years ahead of the intended grade level and a one-and-done testing format, the STAAR exam struggles to provide a fair measure of student readiness. It fails to account for the diverse talents and learning paces of students.

Teaching Beyond the Test

At Nerd Academy, our approach to the TEKS standards is anything but standard. We recognize the importance of a solid educational foundation but believe in going beyond mere test preparation. Our curriculum is infused with innovative programs like PETROSTEAM, emphasizing the oil and gas industry crucial to the Permian Basin’s economy and incorporating cutting-edge fields such as AI and media literacy. This is designed to enrich students’ learning experiences, making education more relevant to their surroundings and the future.

The Cost of Standardization

The focus on standardized testing has led to significant educational and emotional costs. Teaching to the test limits educators’ flexibility, creating gaps in students’ knowledge and stifling creativity. Moreover, the emphasis on test scores overlooks the broader aspects of learning, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability—skills imperative for success in the 21st century.

Looking to the Future

The education landscape is shifting, with many colleges adopting test-optional policies. This trend signifies a growing acknowledgment that standardized tests may not definitively measure a student’s abilities or potential. At Nerd Academy, we’re committed to preparing students for this changing world, ensuring they’re ready for academic pursuits and equipped to thrive in their personal and professional lives.

Conclusion

As we look beyond the confines of standardized testing, Nerd Academy remains dedicated to fostering an environment where every student can discover their passions, develop their talents, and achieve excellence. Focusing on comprehensive education and personal growth, we’re not just preparing students for tests—we’re preparing them for life.

In a rapidly evolving educational landscape, it’s clear that a shift is underway. At Nerd Academy, we’re at the forefront of this change, embracing a holistic approach to learning that values individual strengths, fosters creativity, and prepares students for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.

The Power of STEM in Local Economies

In the heart of Texas, where oil derricks dot the landscape and the energy sector drives the economy, STEM education is not just a buzzword; it’s a crucial pillar of our future. Here in Odessa and Midland, the oil and gas industries are not only major employers but also central to our community’s identity. That’s why at Nerd Academy, we believe in the transformative power of STEM education – especially as it relates to these vital sectors.

What is STEM Education?

STEM education goes beyond the basic teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It’s an integrated approach that combines these disciplines into a cohesive learning paradigm, emphasizing real-world applications. In the context of the oil and gas economies of Odessa and Midland, STEM education is the bridge connecting young minds to the complex world of energy production and management.

The Oil and Gas Industry: A Perfect Fit for STEM

The journey from a fossil fuel buried deep beneath the earth to a usable energy source is a story of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Whether it’s understanding the geological formations holding oil reserves (science), using advanced drilling techniques (technology), designing efficient extraction systems (engineering), or managing the economics of oil production (mathematics), the oil and gas industry is a living classroom for STEM concepts.

Why STEM Matters Here and Now

In a region where pumpjacks and flares are as much a part of the landscape as the mesquite and the prairie, a STEM-focused education is not just relevant; it’s essential. Our children grow up seeing the direct impact of the oil and gas industry on their community. By integrating STEM education with an understanding of this industry, we prepare them not just for any future but for their future, right here in West Texas.

Addressing the Challenges

While the oil and gas industry offers immense opportunities, it’s not without its challenges. From environmental considerations to the need for sustainable practices, the future of this sector depends on a workforce that’s not only skilled but also innovative and forward-thinking. This is where STEM education plays a pivotal role, nurturing problem-solvers who can navigate and lead in a changing world.

How You Can Contribute

The future of our local economy and the well-being of our community lie in the hands of our next generation. By supporting STEM education, you’re not just helping young minds to explore science and mathematics; you’re investing in the future caretakers of our local industries. Whether you’re a parent, educator, or community member, your involvement in fostering a STEM-rich learning environment is invaluable.

Nerd Academy: A Beacon of STEM in West Texas

At Nerd Academy, we’re not just committed to a vision, but to action – providing an education that’s about more than just absorbing facts. It’s about understanding and shaping the world around us, especially in the crucial sectors of oil and gas. We’re dedicated to preparing the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators, right here in the heart of West Texas’s energy landscape.

Interested in contributing to this transformative journey? Want to learn more about how you can make a difference? Contact Abel or Raquel Nunez at (432) 227-0080 for information on donations or career opportunities.

Join us at Nerd Academy in fueling a brighter, smarter future for our community and beyond.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Odessa, TX – Monday, November 20, 2023 – Abel and Raquel Nunez are proud to announce the planned launch of Nerd Academy, a new private school set to open its doors in August 2024. Aimed at revolutionizing the learning experience for students in grades 1-4, Nerd Academy is committed to offering a unique STEM-focused curriculum with an emphasis on the oil and gas industry, a vital part of the local economy in Odessa and surrounding areas.

Educational Innovation Meets Local Industry

Understanding the significance of the oil and gas industry in Odessa, Nerd Academy’s curriculum is designed to align with STEM methodology, offering insights into various stages of oil production, from drilling and fracking to the role of pumpjacks and pipelines. The goal is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the industry’s impact on their daily lives and future career opportunities.

A Fresh Approach to Learning

Founded by Abel and Raquel Nunez, Nerd Academy is a response to the shortcomings observed in the private school sector. Disheartened by the prevalence of bullying and the lack of accountability in existing institutions, the founders envision a school where anti-bullying laws are stringently followed, creating a safe and nurturing environment for all students.

Parent-Friendly Fundraising

Another core principle of Nerd Academy is its innovative approach to fundraising. The school aims to alleviate the financial and time burden often placed on parents by traditional fundraising methods. Nerd Academy’s fundraising will be managed transparently by the school directors and a volunteer fundraising board, ensuring clarity and purpose in every initiative.

Looking Ahead

With plans to start with at least 30 students and hire two teachers, Nerd Academy is currently finalizing its location and aims to be operational by the summer of 2024. The Nunez’s are excited about this venture and are dedicated to providing a top-notch educational experience that is both meaningful and accessible.
