Nerd Academy is a nonprofit private school in Odessa, Texas, founded by Abel and Raquel Nunez.
We started with a question we could not shake:
We did not set out to start a school.
We were parents trying to do right by our children. We expected school to teach the essentials, keep students safe, communicate with families, and respond when something was not working.
Our experiences showed us how hard it could be to get a concern taken seriously. A child could be given a label before anyone took the time to understand them. A parent could ask a direct question and still leave without an answer.
We knew other families were facing the same frustration. Eventually, we decided to build the school we had been looking for.
Know the child. Teach the essentials. Talk to the parents .
A student should not disappear into a classroom or be defined by a label. We want to know where each child is doing well, where they need help, and what it will take to move forward.
Reading and math are foundational here. So are clear routines, consistent expectations, and learning that connects to life beyond the classroom. When a student struggles, we believe in naming the problem, making a plan, and keeping the family in the conversation.
Parents are part of that work. They know their children, they often notice changes first, and they deserve an honest conversation when they bring us a concern.

We built Nerd Academy as parents, and we lead it with that perspective every day.Abel Nunez brings experience in military education and training, marketing, technology, and the oil and gas industry. He helps shape the school’s direction, connecting strong academics with communication, practical skills, and the world our students are growing into.
Raquel Nunez brings experience in nursing, management, homeschooling, and student support. She helps shape the daily care and structure that allow children to learn and families to feel heard.
Leadership at Nerd Academy stays close to the classrooms and the families we serve. When a parent raises a concern, it reaches the people who can act on it. When something needs to improve, we have a responsibility to address it.
We will not get every day right. We will listen, communicate clearly, and keep doing the work.
Our students should be proud of where they come from and prepared for where they want to go.
That starts with the fundamentals: learning to read well, understand math, think clearly, and express an idea. From there, we help children explore science, technology, creativity, and the industries that shape West Texas and the wider world.
Nerd Academy is still growing. Our purpose is clear: build a serious school where children are known, families are partners, and learning opens doors.
