You will learn why "memorizing" words doesn't work long-term and how to help your child build a permanent reading circuit in their brain.

The Five Pillars of Reading

There are five essential components every child needs to master: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. We break these down into simple terms so you can identify exactly where your child is getting stuck and focus your energy on the area that will make the biggest difference.

Child Brain Development

Every child’s brain develops at a different pace, which is why some students "stall" while the rest of the class moves forward. We discuss why these gaps happen and show you how to use targeted interventions to jumpstart their progress, ensuring they don't become part of the statistic of students who struggle past the 3rd grade.

Secret Stories & Decoding

Give your child the "cheat codes" for reading. We introduce "Secret Stories"—logical explanations for why letters make the sounds they do—which helps children stop guessing based on pictures and start "decoding" words with confidence. This turns a frustrating reading session into a predictable puzzle they can solve.

This is where we pull it all together. We will teach you specific, hands-on strategies you can use at home to turn a stressful reading session into a productive one. You’ll practice these techniques in the Lab so you feel comfortable and confident using them with your child the moment you walk through your front door.

We've given the sytem more than enough time to come up with a viable solution yet Texas still ranks in the bottom tier for student literacy. A Note to Parents: We See the Struggle

Most parents don’t realize there’s a specific problem until it shows up at home. It usually looks like your child guessing words instead of reading them, getting stuck on simple sentences, or avoiding books altogether. When you sit down to help and feel unsure if you’re actually making it worse, please know: that isn't a parenting problem. Most of us were never taught how reading actually works—we were taught to memorize and guess. At the Nerd Academy, we’re here to give you the "missing manual" so you can guide your child with confidence.

What to Expect

This workshop will cover some of the same evidence-based tools and instruction we provide to our students. Rather than a dry lecture filled with academic jargon, we focus on practical, actionable steps that work in the real world to help you support your child without frustration. You will leave the session with a Take-Home Literacy Kit—including physical tools and strategies—to begin using that same evening. Above all, this is a judgment-free zone where we come together as a community to ensure Odessa’s children succeed and build a stronger future for our workforce..
